  1. Part of non-specific immunity is a set of about 20 proteins called complement.
  2. One mode of action of complement proteins is to form a membrane attack complex when triggered by foreign cells or body cells infected by virus.
  3. Clusters of complement protein perforate the cell, whose contents leak out.
  4. Complement also stimulates phagocytic white blood cells to engulf these foreign or infected cells.
